The City of Cullman says Mayor Woody Jacobs has proclaimed Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026, as Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Day in Cullman, recognizing people living with MS and those who support them.

According to the city, the proclamation coincides with the 2026 Move Over MS Walk, scheduled for Oct. 17 from 8 a.m. to noon at Heritage Park in Cullman. The city says North Central Neurology Associates, the Joanne P. LaGanke MS Center and MS Views and News will host the walk to raise awareness and show support for people and families affected by MS.

The city describes multiple sclerosis as an unpredictable disease of the central nervous system that affects the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves, with symptoms and progression that can vary from person to person. The announcement says the disease can also affect patients’ families and loved ones.

According to the city, Dr. Christopher LaGanke founded North Central Neurology Associates and the Joanne P. LaGanke MS Center, which was named in memory of his mother, who lived with MS. The center focuses on MS care, research and patient support in Cullman and participates in clinical trials for new MS treatments, the city says.

The city says Mayor Jacobs encouraged residents to learn more about MS, support those affected and take part in the walk. It identified Debbie Simonson, office manager; Dr. LaGanke; Mayor Jacobs; and Mary Beth Sellers, clinical research coordinator, as attending the proclamation.
